Brent Meistre

Brent Meistre is a Grahamstown-based artist working primarily in photography and video, and is currently a Senior Lecturer in the Fine Art Department at Rhodes University, South Africa. He works with themes of loss, longing and displacement, often using the landscape and natural surroundings as subject matter while simultaneously interrogating the documentary and historical function of photography as a medium. Meistre was the overall Award Winner of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum Biennial Exhibition in the Eastern Cape (2006) for his animated film, A stranger who came with a book in the crook of his arm. More recently, Meistre represented South Africa at the Bamako Biennale, Mali (November 2011 - January 2012) with his stop-frame animation The stranger who licked salt back into our eyes (2009) which incorporates footage from South Africa and Greece.
